The Best is Yet To Come

Acrylic on 2 mahjong papers

25th September 2017

This is another piece that I've put together for an upcoming church camp. The name of this camp is The Best is Yet to Come (TBYC).

This is my first time painting on mahjong paper. I painted on not just one but two pieces! It's my biggest painting to date and I admit I did get a little lazy but I just did my best. The mahjong paper also isn't very durable so I did tear one of the sides a little but I quickly taped it back and thankfully it's not very obvious.

I started by painting an outline of the mountain then began painting the sky from the edges and working my way in. I then painted the water, mountains/land, madesome changes to the sky (because the light part was too big) and ended off with the stars.

I'm quite happy with the result :)

The lead-up to camp has been rather turbulent for my team and we've been facing a lot of judgement and criticism. This has pushed me to find ways to improve and kind of 'prove' my teams worth.

I came up with the idea of decorating the prayer room with a different artwork/theme for each day. This is the piece for the first day.

I wanted it to be mellow and reflective. I initially thought of painting rain or a drizzle but I doubt it'll turn out as serene as I want it to so I chose a night landscape instead which I think worked out for the better.

The stars, which were painted with titanium white acrylic paint reminded me of everyone's individuality and how beautiful it is when everyone is different and random.

It's a lot of hope and pressure to put on a painting but I really hope it invokes some kind of contemplative and promising emotion from the participants.

With this being the first artwork I'm bringing and putting up in camp, I'm hoping that it will set the mood for the prayer room for the next 2 days in camp. It's also why I gave this piece the name of the camp.
